Believe it or not, this little 15 pounder spent the first five years of her life as an outside dog tied to a tree. A terrible life for any dog, but especially hard on such a delicate little critter! The Athens anti-tethering law turned out to be Lula's ticket to a better life though, because her owners brought her to the pound and now she's joined our merry band of foster dogs. Her owners stated that she is housebroken, well-behaved and good with kids. Lula proved that to us during her recent Easter adventure. Lula is afraid of thunder, and the last storm occured when her foster mom wasn't home. In a panic, Lula pried open a window that had been left cracked open, jumped through the screen and over the fence. Fortunately, she ran about 2 miles straight to an elementary school playground, where a very nice family found her. They called her and she immediately ran up to them so they brought her to their home just before the rain started. She spend the next 24 hours loving the attention of the kids and was so friendly and well-behaved she was even invited to join the daughter's birthday party as an honored guest! Since Lula wears an ID tag, the family was able to contact her foster mom, who came and got a Lula who was sorry to leave the slumber party. Lula is a very sweet girl who can be slightly shy girl in new situations but warms up quickly. She gets along great with the other dogs in her foster home, ignores the cats and is a little scared of the bunny. Lula walks very nicely on a leash and she's well-behaved in the car too. Despite her slight shyness she's actually a very calm dog and is adjusting to housedoghood quickly. Her foster sister Emily is a recent shy-girl-turned-playgirl, so she's showing Lula the ropes. We're starting to think that Lula thinks she is a cat - she loves to curl up in your lap or in quiet places like the laundry basket. When the other dogs get rowdy or start to bark at the mail lady, Lula retreats to the back of the house with the kitties until things settle down. Although she isn't a real high energy dog, she has impressed herself with her althetic ability to scale her foster mom's four foot fence and will try it again if she is in the yard unsupervised. No doubt she's looking for another birthday party ;) Lula's fencing skills aren't a problem for her foster mom though, since she walks nicely on a leash, is good in the house, and would rather spend most of her time there with her people anyway.
